Deepwater Buoy

Deepwater Bouy
Type of Vessel: Deepwater Buoy
Type of Project: Design, model test and assist in supervision of construction of five similar buoys used for air combat training
Client: Cubic Corporation

Description of Project:
ACMA designed five similar semi-submersible buoys for the Cubic Corporation, San Diego, California. The buoys, triangular in configuration, are moored in 8,000 to 12,000 feet of water and used by the U.S. Air Force for combat training of pilots. The design consisted of hydrostatic calculation, stability calculations, motion analysis, structural calculations, mooring calculations and optimum draft calculations.

ACMA assisted in and supervised the model testing of the buoy at Offshore Technology Corporation, Escondido, California. ACMA was Cubic Corporation’s submittal agent to American Bureau of Shipping for all required drawings and calculations so that the buoys were classified as unmanned offshore installations.

During the construction of the buoys, ACMA provided shipyard support to Cubic Corporation at the Sumitomo Heavy Industry shipyard in Japan. Shipyard support was provided over a four-month period during which time on-site design changes were incorporated. ACMA supervised and witnessed the shipyard inclining experiments on the first two buoys.

ACMA also assisted in installation of buoys offshore Kinawa and instructed the operating personnel in proper ballasting and operation of the buoys.
