Description of Project:

ACMA and naval architects Schuller & Allan were selected by the Texas Department of Transportation to oversee the design and construction of a 264-foot ferry by Conrad Industries in Morgan City, Louisiana, that carries approximately 70 vehicles, 500 passengers and be manned by a crew of six. The ferry connects two segments of Texas State Highway 87 that allow motorists to cross the Bolivar Roads Channel between Bolivar Peninsula and Galveston Island. This vessel joins a fleet of TxDOT ferries that travel 2.7 miles in approximately 18 minutes across one of the world’s busiest waterways that supports the Port of Houston, the nation’s largest inland port.

As the owner’s representative, ACMA monitored design and specification compliance, verified the fit and finish. ACMA’s primary focus involved changing and upgrading the propulsion equipment currently being used by the TXDOT ferry fleet. Our recommendations included utilizing a new AC variable frequency propulsion system, EPA Tier II diesels and a ‘triple-blade’ high-aspect rudder system for increased vessel maneuverability. A new electronic engine control system was incorporated into the vessel which has an ABS ACCU endorsement along with a Maltese Cross A1.
